The Dutch National Scrubbing Center (NaWas) protects participants against DDoS attacks. Besides protection, NaWas offers valuable insights about the changing landscape of DDoS. To better combat these malicious attacks, we share our up-to-date knowledge with interested parties. Together we stand strong against DDoS attacks.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

The number of DDoS attacks handled by NaWas in Q2 shows a notable drop compared to the previous quarter, new statistics from NBIP show. The nonprofit scrubbing center handled 419 attacks during the period, compared to 556 attacks the previous quarter. Historically, however, this is a difference that fits a pattern, with more DDoS attacks being mitigated by the NaWas in the first months of the year than in the second quarter.<\/p>\n

Even though the number of attacks decreased, there was a sharp increase in very large attacks of 100 Gbps or more. The largest attack handled was 353 Gbps. The most common types of attacks were DNS Amplification, Memcached Amplification, NTP Amplification, UDP Flood and ACK Flood.<\/p>\n

Still, the most complex and aggressive DDoS attacks originate with hacktivist groups that carry out attacks mainly on government and healthcare institutions as part of conflicts.<\/p>\n

There appears to be a rise in attacks that target critical network infrastructure. These attacks abuse the time to live (TTL) mechanism and can thus overload network equipment, causing it to go down.<\/p>\n

Notable in this regard was\u00a0the announcement<\/a>\u00a0by hacktivists on Telegram around the European elections that this type of attack would be used more frequently. Although things seem relatively calm at the time of publication of these figures, as always it is important to remain vigilant. Parties having difficulty mitigating these types of attacks can contact NBIP.<\/p>\n
