More DDoS attacks in 2021, attacks also more powerful and complex
DDoS attacks have become more powerful and complex compared to previous years. At the same time, we see the duration of DDoS attacks increasing. The increasing duration, complexity and scope of DDoS attacks fits into a trend that has been going on for several years. In 2018 and 2019 and 2020, we recorded 938, 919 and 1610 attacks respectively with the NaWaS. In 2021, there were a whopping 2830. That represents a significant increase in the number of attacks in one year.
This trend continues as we saw the most powerful attack reaching 319 Gbps.
Last quarter, the number of attacks lasting longer than 4 hours increased. Hackers are also becoming increasingly innovative in the way attacks are carried out. For example, we are seeing a notable increase in DDoS attacks at the application layer, which are not as easily detected by traditional mitigation methods. New mitigation methods are being developed to counter these new types of attacks.
